As the Applied Policy team grows to better serve our clients, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Steven Johnson as Health Policy Director.

Steven comes to Applied Policy from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), where he most recently served as division director responsible for the quality reporting requirements for the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP).

As Division Director, Steven coordinated with other CMS components including the Center for Clinical Standards and Quality and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation to align the ACO quality measurement approach to manage and coordinate Shared Savings Program ACO quality-reporting infrastructure and assess ACO quality performance. He also maintained and oversaw the communications and policy development for quality within MSSP, as well as the agency’s payment standardization contract.

During his tenure at CMS, Steven served as the lead rule writer for several Medicare and payment rules, was the team lead for several models, served as a program manager for cooperative agreements and demonstrations, and worked in an operational capacity to implement various Medicare policies across the nation.

Steven holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Grinnell College and a Master of Science in Urban Policy Analysis and Management from The New School, Milano School of Policy, Management, and Environment.
